Gallea, James B. Age 88, of Eden Prairie, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2013, with his family at his side, listening to his favorite music and praying the Rosary. Preceded in death by his parents, Ernie and Sue Gallea; and his brother, Paul. Jim was born and raised in Redwood Falls, MN, and graduated from Redwood Falls High School in 1943. He immediately joined the Army and served in the 44th Infantry Division in Germany and Austria in the final months of WWII. Jim miraculously survived a German mine explosion and won the Purple Heart in addition to three Bronze Stars. He was always proud to be part of the Greatest Generation. Following graduation from the U of M in Mechanical Engineering in 1949, Jim worked in a variety of positions until his retirement after 22 years at Control Data Corp. At CDC he was a construction project manager and his credits include projects in Korea and Iran. Jim married Loretta Green of Anoka June 19, 1948 and together they enjoyed 61 years of marriage. Jim loved flying and soloed in a J3 Cub in 1942. In the years before his death he relished flying (even upside down) with son, Bill, including a 2011 flight from Minneapolis to Maine to see grandson, Jim. He also loved golf, hunting, and fishing, plus spending time at Green Lake where his parents lived in their retirement. More than anything, Jim Gallea was proud of his family, and put them first in his thoughts. He inspired everyone with his devotion to Loretta while her health slowly declined. Everyone remembers Jim as being more interested in others than in his own cares. Jim's family would like to say a special 'thank you' to the 4East staff at Methodist Hospital, whose extraordinary caring and compassion helped get him across the finish line with a minimum of suffering. He is survived by his children, William (Jeanne) of Helena, MT, Barbara (Joseph Ortner) of Minnetonka, and Richard (Mary) currently living in Singapore; grandchildren, James (Claire Danby) Gallea of Pittsburgh, PA, Brian Gallea of Clearfield, UT, Rachel and Joseph Gallea of Minneapolis; step grandson, Jason (Bridget) Ortner of Shakopee; many nieces and nephews, including his "second daughter", Rita Kach, of Bloomington; and Sally Hogan, a special friend at Summit Place. Celebration of Jim Gallea's life will take place on Saturday, August 24, starting with visitation at 9 AM followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at Pax Christi Catholic Community, 12100 Pioneer Trail, Eden Prairie, MN. Private interment will take place Monday at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Park Nicollet Frauenshuh Cancer Center, or to the Care Fund of Pax Christi Catholic Community.
