Egan, William Thomas Age 86, of Edina, MN, died peacefully on October 22, 2012, preceded in death by his parents Arthur J. and Anne B. Egan. Bill is survived by Mary Alice (Oss) Egan, the love of his life and wife of 62 years; his children, Kate (Terry) Steinmetz, Tim (Kara), Sheila (John) Oien and Bill (Sue); grandchildren, Matt, Mike and Sara Steinmetz and Aindrea, Tom, Michael, Claire and Kathleen Egan; his brother, Tom Egan and sister, Suzanne Delaney; and many nieces and nephews. Bill was born December 16, 1925 in St. Paul, and grew up in Southwest Minneapolis. He attended St. Thomas Academy and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving from 1944-46. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1950 with Bachelor of Science in Law and JD degrees and joined the Meagher Geer law firm where he began a long and storied career as a trial lawyer. In 1960, Bill partnered with his friends Gene Bennett and Stu Rider to form the law firm that would become Rider Bennett Egan & Arundel, a general practice law firm, well-known for its collegial work environment and progressive policies that provided opportunities for advancement for all of its lawyers, particularly for women. Bill distinguished himself as a trial lawyer and a leader in the legal community. Renowned for his respectful and professional demeanor, both inside the courtroom and out, Bill worked tirelessly to improve the legal profession through leadership positions in many professional organizations including the American College of Trial Lawyers, the International Society of Barristers (President) and the Minnesota Defense Lawyers Association (President). Bill was a caring mentor to dozens of lawyers, many of whom have gone on to distinguished careers as trial lawyers, law firm leaders, judges and politicians. He was well-loved by many colleagues who worked with him over the years. Bill was a loving husband and father, the anchor of his family and a trusted friend to many. He was an avid and accomplished golfer, a master of storytelling and a gentle man who always saw the best in others. Bill was a devout Catholic and supported the Church's mission through his many years of service as a Trustee at Our Lady of Grace parish, President of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Ministries, Trustee at St. Thomas Academy, and membership in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Mass of Christian Burial Monday, October 29, 2012, 11:00 AM at the Church of Our Lady of Grace, 5051 Eden Ave., Edina, MN. Visitation Sunday 3-5 PM at Our Lady of Grace and one hour prior to Mass. Private interment Lakewood Cemetery.
