Adrienne Keen McFarland Obituary
Adrienne Keen McFarland Adrienne Keen McFarland lost her battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) about 6:35 p.m. Saturday evening, March 9, 2013, while in the company of her loving husband and daughter, and rambunctious dog Missy, at her Dallas home. She was 61. Adrienne graduated from Coronado High School in El Paso, TX, at age 16, already a lover of good food, good wine, and most things French. She developed an enthusiasm for a skinny boy and future banker from a pioneering New Mexico family which outlasted her enthusiasm for formal education at UT Austin-but she never lost her love of learning, particularly all things literary. Adrienne had an infectious laugh, a talent for marshaling erstwhile intractables to her cause, and a passion for family and friends that she brought to bear during her storied tenure in Austin at the University of Texas Dean of Students Office, the Frank Erwin Special Events Center, the Westlake Picayune, and most importantly as Executive Assistant to Texas state senator Rodney Ellis. She would have been regarded with great suspicion by political conservatives since she was a stark raving, women's rights-supporting progressive Democrat, if not for the fact that she was more fun than a barrel of monkeys and had the habit of being right most of the time. The load of Adrienne's final journey was considerably lightened by Dr. Cynthia Wilder, whose attentive care and consummate professionalism kept her stable for 3½ years in spite of her many medical issues, and her loving caregivers from ReachOut Home Care in Dallas, who kept her supplied with good company and great chocolate. While PSP took Adrienne's boisterous voice, ended her long walks, and gradually closed her sparkling eyes, those fortunate enough to know her will smile when they remember her and will hear her laughter forever. Adrienne is survived by her husband of nearly 44 years, Bill McFarland; son Joel McFarland and his wife Theresa, grandchildren Madelyn and Isaac; daughter Joanna McFarland Owusu and her husband Drexell, grandchildren Miles and Max; and siblings Thomas H. Keen and Elise Keen Anderson, and their families. A memorial will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas, Texas at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 23rd, with an appropriately raucous celebration of her life and loves later that afternoon at the Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen at 3520 Oak Lawn, Dallas, Texas. (Wear bright colors! We're celebrating her colorful life!) Please donate to CurePSP (www.curepsp.org), the Foundation for PSP/CBD and Related Brain Diseases, or the Parkinson Voice Project (www.parkinsonvoiceproject.org). And when in doubt, order that extra glass of wine and the chocolate dessert, too. She would want it that way. Please visit www.sparkman-hillcrest.com for online condolences.
