Our Heavenly Father called Bernhard Carl Gersch, Jr. (our beloved B.C., Grandad) home on Friday, February 14, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.
B.C. was born in Dallas, Texas on Aug. 13, 1929 to Bernhard Carl Gersch, Sr. and Josephine Heitmeyer Gersch. After graduation from Crosier Tech. High School he attended North Texas University where he met his future bride. He then served in the Korean War in the VA702 on the USS Boxer aircraft carrier. In 1951, he married Barbara Brown and they were blessed with two daughters. In 1957, he graduated as an Architectural Engineer from The University of Texas, and designed bridges for the Texas Highway Department for 22 years. After 14 additional years, he retired as the Supervising Waterway Planning Engineer for the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway section of the Transportation Planning Dept.
Upon his retirement in 1993, he and Barbara moved to their ranch near Llano. He designed and built much of their spacious ranch house and loved having family and friends visit. B.C. was an avid reader, and an active member of the Highland Lakes Flying Club. He was an orange-blooded Longhorn fan and ushered at many UT football games. He loved singing in the church choir, fishing, hunting, playing cards and taking RV trips with friends.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Gersch; daughters, Deborah Anderson of Llano, Stephanie Madden and husband Michael of Austin; granddaughters, Monica Fielding and husband Jimmie, April Reed and husband Skyler, and Kayla Anderson Fuller; grandsons, Damon Anderson and Myles Madden; great-grandchildren, Makenzie Fielding and Mason Fuller; and several nieces and nephews.
B. C. is preceded in death by his parents, and sister and her husband, Bernice and Gus Melde.
Funeral services will be held at the Genesis Lutheran Church 15946 E. Highway 29, Buchanan Dam, Texas on Tuesday February 18, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Capital Parks Cemetery 14501 N. IH 35, Pflugerville, Texas on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. An online guest register may be signed at www.PutnamCares.com.
