Camille Newberry Shannon Camille Newberry Shannon died in Austin on Wednesday, November 21, 2012. She was born to Gatewood and Velma Brown Newberry on April 16, 1935 at Old St. David's Hospital. Camille was a graduate of Austin High School (Class of 1953) and of the University of Texas. At the University, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, the Orange Jackets, and was active in intramural sports. In 1955, Camille was presented as a debutante by the Austin Bachelors Club. Upon graduation she taught school in Dallas for a year and then married Bob Shannon who had courted her at the University. After living in Houston for a while, the Shannons returned to Austin. During the course of the years, Camille had three daughters, Laurel, Elizabeth Camille, and Lesley Brevard. Lesley died in 1989 and Laurel in 2002. Camille participated in Bible Study Fellowship and was a leader in Community Bible Study. In later years, she enjoyed the "Book Club", the Junior League Sustainers' Garden Workshop, and Pan American Round Table. Camille was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Before the onset of illness, she was active in the church, taught Sunday School classes and helped prepare innumerable meals for the homeless. She is survived by her husband Bob, her daughter Elizabeth Camille Hudson, granddaughter Carolina Camille Hudson, and son-in-law Greg Hudson, many relatives and countless friends. In the Austin High yearbook, Camille, a seventeen year old girl, was described as, "one who makes life worth living". And so it was- she spent the days of her life caring for family and others. It may surely be said that Camille was a woman of infinite grace and light. She will lie in state at the funeral home on Monday, November 26, 2012 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. Afterward, there will be a reception at the church and burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Driftwood Cemetery in Hays County.
