Charles Grant Jr. Obituary
Charles D. Grant, Jr. August 29, 1963 March 16, 2013 With dignity and honor, Charlie Grant departed this world peacefully on March 16, 2013. Charles Dick Grant Jr. was born in Abilene, Texas on August 29, 1963 to Sandra St. John and Charles Dick Grant, both of whom preceded him in death along with Grandmothers, Susie Foote and Dorothy St. John and Grandfathers, Roy Grant and Roscoe Finis St. John. After graduating from Abilene Cooper High School, Charlie received a BS in Geology from Hardin-Simmons University and then a Juris Doctor, Magna Cum Laude, from St. Mary's University School of Law where he was Editor on the Law Journal. He also received a BA in English from University of Texas, Austin. Upon graduating from law school, Charlie worked as an associate at Gardere & Wynne, L.L.P. in Dallas, Texas. He then moved to Austin where he served as a Travis County Assistant County and District Attorney before entering private practice in 1997. Charlie was the rare lawyer who could fiercely advocate for his client but never cease to be the true gentleman. He was admired by his adversaries as much as by his clients and friends. He was unfailingly polite and considerate and believed in living life to the fullest. His motto was "Go big or don't show up!" In addition to his exceptional legal skills, Charlie had a sweet golf swing and a delicate and precise fly casting stroke. He was an excellent chef, knowledgeable and bold traveler, skilled hunter and possessed a keen sense of humor. These talents, along with a curious nature and engaging personality, gained him what can only be described as a large and diverse group of true friends. Charlie kindly left these words for his team: "I wish to thank Dr. Al Yung of MD Anderson and his capable and caring staff Tamu Abreu and Eva Lu Li, Dr. Jeffrey Weinberg of MD Anderson, Dr. Stanley Kim of Austin, Dr. Morris Groves of Austin along with his capable and caring staff Rachel Smith and Jessica Fabian, the comforting staff with ResCare, and Dr. Glen Luepnitz of Austin, my nutritionist (although getting a plug in an obit might not be his best idea of good press...)" In lieu of flowers, tax deductible donations may be made to the Charles D. Grant Charitable Foundation, dedicated to education regarding a holistic approach to cancer care, treatment and prevention. P.O. Box 5792; Austin, TX 78763. A memorial service celebrating Charlie's life will be on Thursday, March 21 at 4pm at All Saints Episcopal Church, 209 West 27th in Austin, Texas.
