Esther Woods "Smokey" HOLMES Obituary
HOLMES, Esther Woods 'Smokey'Smokey, 95, born in Petoskey Michigan, died peacefully Thursday January 23 in Austin with her daughter at her side. Smokey lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan for many years before moving to Austin to live with her daughter, Sue Thomas. Her son, Bill Woods, and his wife, Nancy, live in North Ft. Myers, Florida. Smokey had 5 grandchildren: Caroline Thomas of Houston, Kate Thomas Simpson of Houston with husband and son Peter, Tim Thomas of Austin with wife Julie and daughters Stella and Etta, Christine Alderman of Humble with husband Brian and daughter Olivia, and Jackson Woods of Arlington, Va with wife Mandi. She is also survived by her sister, Sue Malter, of Portland Oregon, as well as many dear nieces and nephews. Smokey was a Navy nurse in WWII, a faithful and active member of First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, Michigan, a Red Cross volunteer, an avid bridge player, an RN at University of Michigan Hospital, a world traveler, and at 90 learned to play mahjong. She was married to Naval officer, Wilder 'Woody' Wilson Woods and later as a widow married John H Holmes. She will be missed by family and friends alike, but is now safe in heaven. A Service of Remembrance will be held at Hope in the City Church, 4407 Monterey Oaks Blvd Austin 78749 at 1pm on Sunday February 2. She will be buried later this year at Arlington National Cemetery with her husband Wilder W Woods.
