Jerry D. PERKINS Obituary

Jerry D. Perkins, 75, a resident of Austin since 2004, died July 30, 2014 after a short illness.

Born July 10, 1939 in Macon, Missouri, Jerry was the first in his family to finish college. After graduating from Texas Tech University with a B.A. in government in 1966, Jerry went on to earn a Ph.D. in political science and government from Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Thereafter, Jerry enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a political scientist, teaching at Georgia State University, Texas Tech University, and University of Miami (Florida), before being named Callaway Professor of Public Administration and Political Science at University of West Georgia (Carrollton, GA) from 1991-2001.

After retiring, Jerry moved to Austin in 2004 to be near his daughter and immediately immersed himself in city politics and volunteer activities,. He served on the Mueller Commission, which oversaw the development of the former Mueller Airport site and was instrumental in forming the Mueller Neighborhood Association and serving on its board of directors. He also served on the East Austin Neighborhood Council and was an initiator of the Airport Boulevard Society, formed to create bridges among the various neighborhoods close to Airport Boulevard, including the Mueller neighborhood. In addition, Jerry was active in First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin, where he served on its board of directors.

Jerry is survived by his daughter, Dalee Perkins of Austin; seven half-brothers; his ex-wife, Pam Cummings of Houston; and his step-son, Paul Cummings of Houston.

Memorial Service August 23, 3-5p.m., at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin.
