LUIS, Keith Alan "Dr. Louie"

College teacher and recording artist Keith Alan Luis died in Austin, Texas on July 28, 2013.

He was preceded in death by loving parents Carlos William Luis and Lillian Barofsky Luis of Shakopee and St. Paul, MN. He is survived by brothers Richard (Juanita) Luis of St. Paul and David Luis of Sydney, Australia; sister Deborah Edwards (E.J.) of Scottsdale, AZ; nephew and niece Maximillian and Rebecca Edwards; and many cousins.

Keith was born November 27, 1950 in Minneapolis and raised in Shakopee, MN. After graduation from Blake School, Hopkins, MN, he earned his B.A. at Columbia, followed by an M.A. and Ph. D. from Tulane. He taught English at many schools, including Michigan State, Texas State and Tulane Universities.

Keith served as English Department Chairman and Director of the Humanities Division at St. Bernard Parish Community College, Chalmette, LA.

He was a world traveler and an avid chess player. Keith was a vocalist and songwriter who played guitar, mandolin, percussion and lap steel guitar. He was a bluesrocker who led the Blues Gothics combo in New Orleans and Austin, TX. Keith, under the stage name Dr. Louie, wrote and performed six songs for compilation albums (Hungry for Music Records). Over the years he created six albums/CDs of his own on Tain-Hamilton and Jellyroll Records: New Orleans Gothic; We Must Dig; A Holiday Gift for You; Bolts From the Blue; Opposites Reconciled, Extremes Met; and Fillin' the Billie.

Visitation will be held from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 24th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home followed by a memorial service beginning at 7:30 p.m. A memorial service (details to be announced) will be held in Minnesota in March 2014.
