Dr. L G Ferguson passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Seton Hospital in Austin, Texas. He was born on July 15, 1938, in Austin, Texas, to Dr. William C. Ferguson and Josie Mae McDade Ferguson. He met and married his college sweetheart, Etta Watley. His education was at Iowa City High School, Iowa City, Iowa; Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Prairie View A&M University (where he received B.A. and M.A. Degrees in Economics), and Texas A&M University (where he received a Ph.D. in Education Administration/Adult Education. He proudly served in the military at the United States Army Security Agency from January 1961 thru February 1964. His foreign duty assignment was with the 13th U.S. ASA Field Station, Harrogate, England.
Dr. Ferguson began his professional career in private industry at IBM Corporation, Kroger Food Stores, and General Motors Corporation. His educational career included assignments at Paul Quinn College as Registrar and Director of Admissions in Waco, Texas. He also was employed at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas. He was the Director of Special Projects and also an Adjunct Professor of Economics at Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas. Government work was at Family Counseling and Children's Services, Waco, Texas, where he was Director of the Family Social Work Project.
Dr. Ferguson played an active and significant role with the State of Texas for many years. Some of his positions included Supervisor of Program Performance Review, Legislative Budget Board; Director of Staff Development and Training, Department of Community Affairs; Program Director, Adult Education; and in the Workforce Commission he was Program Director, Contracts and Grants, and later as Program Director, State-wide Planning Coordinator.
L G was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Steve Ferguson. He is survived by the love of his life, wife, Etta Mae, his two sisters Dr. Elaine Ferguson and Dr. Maude Ferguson; his children Michael, Donna , Karla and William; his grandchildren, LaMetrica, Jessica, Aaron, Ryan, Jonathon and Desmond; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Memorial Wake Service will be from 6-7 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2014, at King-Tears Mortuary, Inc., 1300 East 12th Street, Austin, Texas. The Celebration of Life Service for Dr. L G Ferguson will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1801 Pennsylvania Ave., Austin, Texas.
