Lorne Earl Joines Obituary
Lorne Earl (Larry) Joines Our loving father and devoted grandfather, Lorne Earl (Larry) Joines passed away peacefully at home in Highland Utah on September 5, 2013 Larry was born near Larrabee Iowa on August 20, 1922 to Percy and Ada Joines and grew up in the thriving farm community there. He graduated high school in Sutherland Iowa in 1940 and received an athletic scholarship to the State University of Iowa in Iowa City. He remained an athlete all his life, playing tennis well into his 80's. While in college he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was married to his next door neighbor and the love of his life, Verna Miller, on November 12,1943 before he was to be shipped overseas. They remained devoted spouses for almost 65 years until Verna's death in 2008. Larry served his country as a U.S. Army war crimes investigator during WWII. After graduating college in 1947, he went to work in personnel and labor relations for Standard Oil. In 1953 he joined 3M company in St. Paul, Minnesota. At 3M he worked in a variety of human resource positions, including international responsibilities, until his retirement as an executive vice-president of 3M in Austin Texas in 1987. He was the point person responsible for bringing 3M to Austin and after retirement served the Austin community as a volunteer in more than 20 civic, educational and cultural capacities. Larry was enthusiastic about life and loved people. He was always generous with his time and resources and was available to listen deeply and help others with wise counsel to the very end of his life. His wisdom and loving heart will be greatly missed by his surviving friends and family, including his children, Janine Baker and Steven Joines of Boulder Colorado and Debra Taggart of Highland, Utah, his seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He will be laid to rest on September 22, 2013 at the Waterman Cemetery in Sutherland, Iowa.
