Robert Vance Avant,Sr. July 6, 1912 - Nov. 20, 2012 Robert Vance Avant, Sr. departed this Earth on November 20, 2012. He was born to Bessie Francis and Buell Avant on July 6, 1912 in Harrison County, Texas. He celebrated his 100th birthday in Waco on July 6, 2012 and represented the few remaining members of the Greatest Generation. Robert grew up in the piney woods of rural Harrison County and graduated from Marshall High School. He attended East Texas Baptist College and UCLA. Upon returning from California, Robert taught school in Harrison County. He was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1941 and 1943 representing Harrison County and other counties in East Texas. He served with a number of prominent Texans of the time including his deskmate in the House of Representatives, future Governor Price Daniel. Upon adjournment of the legislative session in 1943, Robert resigned from the House of Representatives and joined the U.S. Army where he served with the Judge Advocate General. After World War II, Robert attended the SMU law school and returned to Central Texas for a career in real estate, agriculture, and state government. He retired in 1980 and moved back to Marshall where he married the former Francis Hulme. They resided in Marshall until 2004 when they moved to Waco so they could be closer to Francis' and Robert's children. Robert is survived by his two sons, Robert Avant, Jr. and wife Sharon of Taylor, Texas, and David Avant of Santa Fe, New Mexico; his nephew, Wilburn Oney of Harleton, Texas; and step children, Fred Hulme and wife Carolyn of Waco, Carolyn Hulme Monroe of Waco, and David Hulme and wife Dianne of Linden, Texas. He was preceded in death by two older brothers, Marshall Avant and Francis Avant; his beloved sister, Ruth Avant Oney; and his wife of thirty years, Francis. The family wants to thank the staff at SPJST Assisted Living at Taylor, Texas and Scott and White Hospital at Temple, Texas for taking wonderful care of him during his last few months after his wife's death in August. Graveside services will be held at the Smyrna Cemetery at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, November 27. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be provided to the Smyrna Cemetery Fund, Smyrna Cemetery Association, 292 Smyrna Cutoff, Diana, Texas 75640.
