Robert Lewis Gage Obituary
Robert Lewis Gage Robert Lewis Gage was born August 12, 1915 in Austin, Texas and died June 1, 2013. He graduated from old Austin High School and worked with the WPA in the late 1930s. Inducted into the Army Air Corps, he served three years in England during WWII. On leaves, he drew pastels at the Art Center of Rainbow Corner, London, and exhibited in a traveling servicemen art show sponsored by the Red Cross. Near the close of the war he was sent to Shrivenham American University and studied drawing and painting. After the war he returned to the U.S. to study at the Art Students League of New York with Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Byron Browne, and Robert Ward Johnson and exhibited in group shows on 57th St. Robert exhibited in many Texas Fine Arts Association shows in Austin and on circuit of Texas towns. He had a one-man show at Laguna Gloria Gallery in Austin. He exhibited his art at the Dallas Museum, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Witte Museum in San Antonio. In the 1950s Robert opened his first antique shop and sold many fine antiques for over 50 years. He also was a supporter of the art and drama scene in Austin, helping many young students. Robert is survived by his sister, Helen Blackstone, many nieces and nephews, and numerous friends. Contributions may be made to Meals On Wheels, 3227 E. 5th St., Austin, TX 78702.
