Obituary Condolences

SCHUHMACHER, Susan Kathrine

Susan Kathrine Schuhmacher died Monday, September 30, 2013 in her Greensboro, North Carolina home after an 18-month fight with cancer. Susan was born on September 20, 1949 in Houston, Texas to John and Paula Schuhmacher. She graduated from Duchesne Academy in Houston in 1968 and attended the University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. In 1978, Susan married Claude Flueckiger. They lived in Switzerland for 21 years where they raised their three children. In 1997, the family moved to Greensboro. Susan sang with the Greensboro Choral Society and volunteered as a lunch buddy at Hunter Elementary School. Susan was an avid reader and loved gardening, the outdoors, and taking long walks with her guide dog, Monroe. She was passionate about animals, especially the many dogs and rabbits she cared for. Susan was preceded in death by her parents and her sister and brother-in-law Dineen and Bill Godfrey. She is survived by her daughter Ellen Flueckiger and husband Matthew Hornaday of Greensboro, and their children Michael and Kate, her son Matthew Flueckiger and fiancee Ashley Stone of Austin, and her son Patrick Flueckiger of Greensboro. Susan is also survived by her brother John Schuhmacher Jr. and wife Marianne of Aspen, CO, and her brother Daniel Schuhmacher and wife Sally of Austin, as well as many nieces and nephews and dear friends who were a joy to her in life and a source of strength during her illness. Susan faced each of the many challenges in her life with courage, grace and dignity. She often reminded her children that although she had cancer, cancer did not have her. Susan and her family would like to thank Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro and Home Instead for the care they provided for her in her final months. There will be a graveside service for family and friends at La Grange City Cemetery in La Grange, TX at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2013. A reception will follow at Live Folks Farm, 2845 Hartfield Road, in Round Top, TX. For questions with directions, please call (832) 421-7613. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, 10202 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77024.
