Susan Louise Garrison died unexpectedly November 10, 2013. She is survived by her husband Jim, by her daughter Emma and her son Paul, and by her sisters Christine, Connie, Cynthia, and Stephanie. The second daughter of Frederick Sheffield Howard and Lois Comstock Howard, Susan was born and raised in the Richmond district of San Francisco. She graduated in 1961 from George Washington High School as class valedictorian. She pursued a degree in English at Stanford University, graduating in 1965, and received her law degree from the University of Texas Law School in 1976. In law school she was a member of Order of the Coif, served on the Texas Law Review, and was recognized for publishing the best comment in the Review during her second year. From 1976 until her retirement in 2010, Susan worked for the Texas Attorney General's Office on the Opinion Committee, where she was highly regarded for her knowledge of Texas law and for her polished writing on difficult legal questions. Susan enjoyed gardening, reading good books, and - since retirement - tutoring students at Webb Middle School and acting as treasurer of her local P. E. O. chapter. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was a deacon, a leader in the adult education program, and a regular volunteer helping homeless families through the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Susan was a woman of the highest character, committed to justice and compassion in all areas of life. More than anything else she cared for her family as a devoted sister and as a loving wife and mother. There will be a service of remembrance at First Presbyterian Church Saturday November 16 at 11:00 AM.
