MELCHIOR, Thomas H.|
(December 31, 1935 - January 17, 2014)
Thomas H. Melchior passed away on January 17, 2014 in Seattle, WA after suffering a stroke on January 3, 2014. He had just celebrated his 78th birthday. Tom will be deeply missed by his family and friends throughout the country.
Tom was born on December 31, 1935 in Madison Lake, MN. He was the oldest of 11 children born to Olivia Margaret and Herbert John Melchior. Tom served faithfully and honorably for 21 years in the U.S. Air Force and retired in 1976 as a Chief Master Sergeant. The family lived in several different states during his military career including: Texas, Delaware, Nebraska and Louisiana. He earned two commendation medals for meritorious service and outstanding achievement during his service from 1963-1968. Tom also earned a bronze star during his deployment to Vietnam from 1970-1971. After retirement, he and his family moved back to Austin in 1976 where he began a 33 year civilian career with Tracor which later became BAE Systems.
Tom always worked hard to provide for his family. He enjoyed staying busy. Sitting still was not an option for him! Throughout his life, the lawn was always mowed and neatly manicured, the cars were always impeccable inside and out, and his shirts and pants were always starched!
Tom enjoyed piloting small aircraft for recreation during his military service. Aviation was one of his true loves. His children enjoyed flying with him into the wild blue yonder!
In recent years, he volunteered at a local senior activity center in Seattle where he drove seniors to and from activities and appointments. He enjoyed music, singing karaoke, dancing, gardening, baking and fishing.
He will be remembered as a generous, fun-loving man who lived a long, full life. We will also remember one of his favorite sayings from back in the day..."Rave on mad dog!"
Tom is preceded in death by his parents Olivia Margaret (Hoehn) Melchior and Herbert John Melchior along with sister, Phyllis Johnson and twin brothers, Jim and Gene Melchior.
Tom is survived by his spouse Marciana Melchior of Seattle, WA, former spouse of 43 years Barbara Roeglin Melchior of Austin, TX and his four children with Barbara including: Mark Melchior & wife Patty of Austin, TX, Tari Reischl of Austin, TX, Scott Melchior & wife Beth of Edmond, OK and Jennifer Melchior of Austin, TX.
