Ret. Major William D Sturdevant passed away May 8, 2014 after two years of a brave and courageous battle with neck & oral cancer. He never once complained of all the pain or not eating his favorite foods he loved. Bill fought a long hard battle not for himself he said, but for everyone who loved him and counted on him.

Bill was born in Fort Dodge Iowa on March 3, 1936 to William Henery and Bernice Sturdevant.

Bill graduated from high school in 1954 & joined the air force Feb 9. Basic training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio from there airborne radar maint. School at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Miss. March AFB at Riverside, Ca until 1957. Attended Fort Dodge Jr. College, moved to Ft. Collins, Co, where he went to Colorado State University and rec'd a B.S. April of 1962. Once again joined the Air Force, Back to Lackland for Officer Training School. First assignment was at Adair AFB outside of Corvalis, Or. On July 1962 went to Iceland at the Naval Station at Keflivik. July 1966 he commanded a small Air force unit on an Army Special Force Camp near the Cambodian border in Viet Nam. In Sept 1967 family moved to Birkenfield, Germany. Bill earned a MBA from the University of Utah. In 1970 the family moved to Bergstrom AFB. Bill returned to Viet Nam in 1972-1973, Then Langley AFB in Virginia then to Clark Air force back in the Philippines in 1977 retired a Major in Nov 1978, making Austin his home. Bill worked at Motorola, sold real estate, and owned a cleaning business for 10 years. His Favorite was working with all his wonderful friends at Meals on Wheels for 10 years.

Bill Always remained patriotic to his country and loved the military to this day, which is why we paid for the darn house phone, waiting for the Pentagon to call him to active duty.

Preceded in death by his parents William and Bernice and Sister Beverly. Survived by the his loving wife and best friend Peggy, Daughter's Debbie McCown & Bich Phuong, Grandson Sean, former wife Luciaenda Wenzel, 4 step daughters, 2 step sons & spouses. Many grandchildren & great grandchildren. So many friends that visited and help Bill along the way especially Pastor Meg & friend Leigh Ann. I would like to personally thank Bill's friends that transported him to treatment last year so I could keep my job.

To honor his memory a Memorial service and reception will be held at 7 pm Wed. May 14 2014. At the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Austin Texas. In lieu of flowers please donate to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or Meals on wheels in Bills honor. A Military Memorial service will be held at a later date at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio Texas.
