SALEM - Allan John Hedges died July 25, 2013 of Alzheimer's disease. He was 92.
Allan was born April 23, 1921 in Portland Oregon to Alfred and Lucy (Murphy) Hedges. Both of his parents were emigrants from England. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1940 and after working briefly at Meier & Frank's he became a boilermaker at Portland shipyards, building ships needed for World War II. Although exempt from the draft because of this, he decided to join the Army Air Corps (later the Air Force) in 1943. This began his 20 year military career, retiring with the rank of master sergeant in 1963. Allan married Irmgard Lohs in 1951 in Munich Germany while he was part of the occupation forces. They were married until her death in 1991.While in the military he completed a bachelor's degree from the University of Omaha.
Allan then began a second career in child welfare, first in Hillsboro, Oregon for six years and then in Vallejo, California for ten years. After retiring in 1979, he returned to Oregon, settling in Salem. After retirement, he traveled extensively in Europe, did volunteer work and gardened. He married Esther Bossell in Salem in 1994. Their happy marriage was a blessing to them both.
He is preceded in death by his sister Lucille Hedges Wood and his daughter Brigitte Jacobs. He is survived by his wife and sons Allan (Joan), Bruce and Kevin and by his daughter Mona (Milton) West, stepdaughter Janet Hatfield, son-in-law Helmut Jacobs, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on August 2ndat 9:00am. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
