Audrey Jane Toy

October 11, 1919 - November 23, 2012

"Everyone should have a Mrs. Toy." That's what a family friend once said after enjoying one of Audrey's home cooked meals. Besides being a terrific cook, she was an energetic, dynamic individual for all of her 93 years. Wise and level-headed, she knew just when to be careful and when to plunge into a new adventure.

The daughter of Joseph and Nettie Bastow was born in Davenport, IA. She had an older sister, Ruth. The family soon relocated to Detroit, MI where her father worked for General Motors. In 1939 she married James Murray Toy, who served in the Army Air Corps after being drafted in 1943. They were stationed at stateside locations, including Sioux Falls, SD and Yuma, AZ.

After the war they settled in Grosse Pointe, MI. and had two daughters. In 1958 the family moved west to Carmel, CA, where their son was born. In the mid 1960s Audrey commuted to San Jose State University three days a week, earning her degree at the age of 48.

In 1968 circumstances led the family to Salem. Audrey soon took a job with City of Salem Community Development, helping residents of older neighborhoods rehabilitate aging houses. Her husband passed away in 1974, and she continued working with the city until 1980 when she made a dramatic career move and became a licensed stockbroker. She worked the next quarter-century in that field, starting with Foster & Marshall. In later years she was a part-time broker's assistant at A.G. Edwards until she retired in 2006.

And, oh, she loved to sing! Over many years she performed with several choral groups, including the Salem Chorale, Festival Chorale, and most recently with Just for Fun Singers. She was also a soloist at Salem's Christian Science Church from time to time.

Audrey is survived by her children, Liz Toy of Salem, Maggie Westerfield of Portland, and Jim Toy of Seaside, CA; two granddaughters, Debbie Martin of Aurora, CO and Barbara Bliss of Beaverton; plus four spunky great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 5th at the Christian Science Church, 935 High St. SE, Salem.
