Donald Morris Crothers, 77, formerly of Salem, passed away on March 16, 2014 in New Haven, CT with his family by his side after a brief battle with cholangiocarcinoma. A graduate of North Salem High School (1954) and member of the Viking Hall of Fame, he was married to Finnish pianist Leena Kareoja-Crothers for 54 years. Professor Crothers was son of the late Dr. Morris King Crothers (Eunice Crothers) of Salem, and Florence Kittredge Crothers. He graduated summa cum laude from Yale in 1958 with a B.S. in Chemistry, earned a B.A. from the University of Cambridge in 1960 and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, San Diego, in 1963. At the time of his retirement from Yale in 2003, he was Sterling Professor of Chemistry and held a joint appointment in the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, of which he was a founding member. After retirement, Don continued to work actively as a partner and scientific consultant for numerous biotechnology firms until shortly before his death. For full obituary and information about his outstanding scientific accomplishments, see New Haven Register, Sunday March 23, or search "Donald Crothers Wikipedia."
Don excelled, whether it was in his generosity toward his students, the support of causes about which he cared, or in being a friend, brother, husband and dad, or granddad. He was such great fun.
He is survived by sisters Shirley Quinn (Lake Oswego) and Susan Crothers (Salem), wife Leena Kareoja-Crothers, daughters Nina and Kristina, grandchildren Sophia, Freya, Evan and Elena, and many other relatives in the Pacific Northwest and in Finland. Services were privately held in New Haven. A larger memorial will be held on June 7th, 2014, at Yale University.
