Elaine McMains (1916 - 2013)

The Guest Book is expired.

September 6, 1916 - May 13, 2013

Dorothy "Elaine" McMains, a 6th generation native Oregonian, passed away May 13, 2013 in Dallas, Oregon at the age of 96.

Elaine was born in Albany, Oregon on September 6, 1916. She was the only child of Merle and Gladys (Hastings) Warner. Elaine spent much of her young life "helping" on her grandparents' farm in Albany where her early love of animals would prove disruptive. She kidnapped the little pigs because she knew one day they would be slaughtered. She felt sorry for the Bull tethered by the ring in his nose and released him. Elaine loved animals and was seldom without a pet dog, cat, or bird until the last few years of her long full life.

She graduated from Albany High School and attended Albany College (now Lewis & Cark). As a young woman a friend dared Elaine to drive a Model T on the railroad bridge in Albany that crossed the Willamette River. Elaine made it all the way to the other side.

Elaine realized early in life the importance of a good job with extra benefits. She began what would become a life-long career with the phone company and started as a telephone operator in Albany. She was quickly promoted to a supervisor position and then transferred to Salem as a trainer. While in Salem she was promoted to Assistant Chief Operator then transferred to the new Corvallis office as Chief Operator. A few years later she was promoted to Chief Operator in Eugene and responsible for long distance service. She retired from the phone company after 32 years of dedicated service.

Elaine was much more than a career woman. During World War II she was a USO Volunteer for the soldiers at Camp Adair. Later she would volunteer for charities and was a member of the First Christian Church in Albany.

She married Keith Brown in 1938. They had a daughter, Dianne Marie Brown.

Elaine's second marriage was to Hugh McMains, a man who shared her love of music and dancing. They remained active and happy until Hugh's death in 1998.

Elaine had a gigantic heart and a small family. She spent much of her time after retirement taking care of her elderly parents and her aunt. Her daughter Dianne brought two very young rambunctious grandchildren to live with Hugh and Elaine in Corvallis while Dianne's husband was serving in Vietnam. The grandkids kept Elaine busy with their antics and years later there were always many stories to share about the time they lived with grandma and grandpa. Elaine loved her family very much.

Along with being dedicated to her career and a loving wife, mother and grandmother, Elaine found time to have fun with friends. Hugh and Elaine traveled and often went to dinner with other couples. They were members of the Elks Lodge in Eugene for many years.

Elaine is survived by her daughter Dianne (Jack) Baker of Dallas, Oregon; her granddaughter Debby Miller of Newport, Oregon; her grandson Albert Baker of Lincoln City, Oregon; her daughter-in law Katie Smith and her great-grandsons Forrest and Jackson Baker of Portland, Oregon.

Her family will hold a private graveside service at Lane Memorial Park in Eugene where Elaine will be laid to rest with her husband. The Bollman Funeral Home is caring for the services. To leave an on-line condolence for the family go to www.dallastribute.com.
