Harold P. Scheyer

July 22, 1926 - August 5, 2014

Harold Scheyer passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 5, 2014. He was born in Washington on July 22, 1926. His life was one of service to his country (U.S. Army WWII 1944-1946 in Japan and the Philippines), and service to his family as a devoted husband of 63 years, and father to 5 children. He worked in many jobs, but his most recent job was Director of Field Services in the Oregon State Juvenile correction system. After he retired in 1984, he served men at the Union Gospel Mission for 15 years. During his WWII U.S. Army experience in September 1945, he was with one of the first troops who explored the devastation of Hiroshima. He graduated from the University of Washington after the war in Business Administration. His favorite hobbies were photography, bird watching, hiking, and cycling. Harold went on the inaugural Cycle Oregon Bike Ride trip in 1988 from Salem to Brookings, and was active in the Salem Bike Club for many years. At age 87, he hiked 3 miles in the Lake Tahoe area above 7,000 feet. Harold is survived by his wife of 63 years, JoAn Scheyer, his brother, William Scheyer Sr., his children: Paula and Dan Fontanini of Salem, Fay and Phil Demeyer of Keizer, Joe and Linda Scheyer of Eugene, Robert and Lois Scheyer of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Malinda and Tom Dye of Beaverton. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Gregory Scheyer, Joanna Scheyer and Lisa Adams, Ben Scheyer, Peter Scheyer, Daniel Scheyer, Stefanie and Bobby Sorensen, and great granddaughter Adelynn Sorensen. Harold will be greatly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, and all the people he helped. A Memorial Service in remembrance of Harold will be 2:00pm Friday, August 15, 2014 at the Salem Alliance Church - 555 Gaines St NE, Salem 97301. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Union Gospel Mission will be appreciated. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
