James "Jim" K. Hansen

STAYTON - Jim, 85, died September 18 in Salem. He was born in Sioux Falls, SD., to J.P. and Lina (Kalweit) Hansen. At an early age, Jim's family moved to Kalispell, MT. After attending Kalispell schools, Jim attended the University of Montana where he received an infantry commission. He served in Japan and Korea during the Korean War, returned to school and received a Bachelor's degree in business. He married Jan Dirks in 1958. In 1960 they had a daughter, Valerie. Due to her physical disabilities they moved to Portland and eventually Stayton where children, Steve and Kris joined the family. Jim spent 25 years as a tax consultant at a law firm. During that time he served in civic organizations including, Kiwanis, Library Board, City Budget Committee, Boy Scout Troop 50 and Rotary. Jim was named Stayton First Citizen in 1985. He also helped build the Stayton High School cafeteria, and rebuild Jordan Covered Bridge. After retiring in 1987, Jim bought a 36 foot sailboat and spent many years on the waters of Washington and British Columbia. A high point of Jim's life was when he crewed on a friend's sailboat, sailing to Tahiti and later to Hawaii. He and Jan enjoyed traveling abroad and also spent many winters in Yuma. Jim is survived by his wife: Jan Hansen of Stayton; daughter: Kris Hansen of Portland; and daughter-in-law: Jill Hansen of Anthem, AZ. He was preceded in death by daughter, Valerie and son, Steve. Memorial contributions may be made to Stayton Library, Santiam Heritage Foundation or Stayton area food banks. A Remembrance Gathering will be held, Saturday, September 28 from 1 - 4:00 pm at Santiam Golf Club, Stayton. Serving the family, North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
