SALEM - Ken died Saturday, June 8, 2013 in Salem due to complications from diabetes. He was born in Berkeley, California, the son of Frank and Ruby Birch. He graduated from Albany High School, Albany, California. Ken enlisted in the US Air Force in 1959 and was stationed at Adair Air Force Base, in Oregon.
Ken married Ardis Alsip in Monmouth, Oregon, on February 8, 1964. They lived on the Alsip family farm near Monmouth for forty-nine years. Ken drove school bus, worked at Oregon Fruit Products, Willamette Industries, and Towmotor before starting his thirty-year career at the Polk County Sheriffs Department. He went into law enforcement because he liked helping people.
Ken was a member of the Independence Elks Lodge, a charter member of the Polk County Saddle-ites and Polk County Sheriffs Mounted Posse, and President of Oregon Association of Mounted Posses in 1987. He was fond of the outdoors and was an avid hunter, angler, camper, and equestrian. Ken enjoyed horse show announcing and competing on many shooting teams. He went to search and rescue and tracking schools and participated in many searches.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Donald and Roger. He is survived by his wife, Ardis Birch, son James (Calene) Birch, grandchildren Michael, Tianna, Dylan, and Bradley. He also leaves behind his brother Stan (Ann) Birch, and his partner in crime, trusted companion, his beloved dog Bandit. He was a grandpa and an inspiration to all children.
