LaVAUGHN FERN KINDWALL PENNER

April 22, 1929 - April 30, 2014

LaVaughn Penner was born at her grandparent's Spragg farm home in the Albert City, Iowa community on April 22, 1929. She died at age 85, April 30, 2014 in an automobile accident. Her father, Clarence Kindwall was the first boy born in this Swedish community and later became the President of the small bank there: when many banks closed, but he managed to succeed. Her mother received a college education and taught school until she married.

LaVaughn enjoyed a happy childhood as an only child till she was 12, and then her brother, Richard, was born to complete the family. Piano lessons seemed like a natural part of her life, being active in music in school and it became her major field of emphasis at Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa). In addition to giving piano lessons, she was always active in church music as pianist and choir and small group accompanist. She especially enjoyed accompanying a ladies choral group in Salem for some time. She was a life time member of Sigma Alpha Iota, an international honor music fraternity. She passed on her love for music to her family, and paid for piano lessons for the grandchildren who chose them. Only her love for her family surpassed her love of music.

She grew up in the Albert City Evangelical Free Church and participated in church activities, but did not become a Christian until college. There she met Lloyd Penner when she played the piano for Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship and Lloyd led the singing. They were married the week after her graduation, June 9, 1951. She was an active member of the Evangelical Bible Church in Dallas for the last 46 years, and was the lead pianist for over 20 years. The ten years she was the pianist for the Sunday night hymn sing in Greenfield Village, and accompanying the Greenfield Voices choir were special to her.

To this union were born Larry (Sharon), Roger (Sonya), Donna (Larry Quesnell) and Scott (Sandy) eight grandchildren and one great grandchild, who survive her. She is also survived by Lloyd, and her brother Richard Kindwall (Judy) and their family.

In addition to music she enjoyed her friends, travel by car, RV and cruise ships. She with Lloyd had been in every state in the union, many of the Canadian provinces, and on five cruises. They spent 20 winter seasons in a home in Mesa and had many friends there as well.

Viewing will be from 4:00 to 8:00pm Thursday, May 8th in the Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center. A graveside service will be held at 10:00am Friday, May 9th in the Dallas Cemetery with a memorial service following at 11:00am in the Evangelical Bible Church.
