Lewis E. Nelson
February 1, 1922 - February 2, 2014
Lewis Nelson was born on February 1, 1922 in Watuga, SD and passed away peacefully the day after his 92nd birthday on February 2, 2014. He was one of six children. He and his family moved from South Dakota to Lebanon, Oregon when he was 11 years old. He stayed in the Lebanon area until he enlisted in the US Navy. He always spoke with such pride when he talked about his service in the Navy and being stationed on the USS Washington battleship.
Following his discharge, he moved to Salem and attended General Motors school. He worked at Emerson Teague as an auto electrician/mechanic. During this time period he also met and married Stella M. Bradbury on November 3, 1950. Sometime around 1951, he started working at E. H. Burrell in Salem and continued working there until his retirement in 1985. For the past 25+ years, he and Stella have enjoyed "snow birding" at Caliente Springs Resort in Desert Hot Springs, CA.
"Papa Lewie" enjoyed being with family/friends, camping, traveling the USA, fishing, golfing, and working in his vegetable garden. He was best known for his loving smile, hugs that he so freely gave, winks, and saying "I love You" right up to the day he passed away. He would help anyone in need and was the person we called upon whenever we were in a jam. He helped with building projects at the Open Bible Church in Keizer and at Westgate Assembly of God in Salem. He attended People's Church from 1982 until the present.
Lewis is survived by his wife Stella; his daughter Merita "Sue" Arnesen; son Randy (wife Carol); son Jeff; 2 grandchildren Seth Arnesen (wife Natasha) and Tyler Nelson (fiancée Nancy) and 2 great grandchildren-Sage Arnesen and Stella Arnesen.
He and Stella were foster parents for over 25 years to 50+children. He was also loved and will be greatly missed by them and others, some of whom are: Carol Bennett (husband Bill & child Lewis), Larry Miller (wife Becky), Gordon Lambert (wife Anmarie), and the "Caliente Springs family".
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. We would be remiss if we didn't say this one last time to Papa Lewie…."Have I told you lately how much I love you?!!"
