Mary Bailey Goodell

February 13, 1935 - March 30, 2014

Mary Aileen Roberts Bailey Goodell, age 79, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Montebello Rehabilitation Hospital in Albuquerque, NM. She was born at home in Greenfield, Iowa on February 13, 1935 to Harold E. and Clara M. Roberts. She was the third of 5 children. Mary attended Greenfield schools and graduated with the class of 1952. She received a nursing scholarship from the American Cancer Society to attend the University of Iowa were she graduated as a registered nurse in 1956. There, she met and married her first husband, Cass H. Bailey. Cass and Mary moved to Oregon in 1966 to raise their three children.

Mary was an active and generous member of her church and many civic organizations: PEO, Chapter EC, Salem Hospital Auxiliary, Salem Hospital Foundation, Salem Assistance League and YoungLife Committee. She was very supportive in all her children's activities. She and her family spent many wonderful trips camping and enjoying the Oregon Coast. Mary's gracious hospitality welcomed many friends and family. She loved showing out-of-town guests around the beauty of Oregon. After Cass' death in 1990, Mary later relocated to Sun City West, AZ. While there she was active in PEO, Chapter DY, the Shepard of the Hills Methodist Church, and enjoyed time with many friends. In July 1995, Mary attended a high school reunion and met high school sweetheart, Millard (Sonny) Goodell. They married in Greenfield in June 1996. They made their home together in Sun City West. After Sonny's death in 2008, Mary stayed in Arizona until health concerns moved her to move closer to family in Albuquerque, NM. During her adult lifetime, Mary's happiest times were spent visiting family and friends in Hawaii, Iowa and Oregon, traveling throughout Europe with family stationed there on military assignments, and baking cookies with her grandkids.

Mary is survived by her sons Dr. (CAPT (USN ret.)) Steve (Barbara) Bailey of Albuquerque and CAPT (USN ret.) Tom (Janet) Bailey of Mt. Pleasant, SC and daughter Susan (COL Craig) Webb of Colorado Springs, CO, 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mary's children will honor her at a graveside service at City View Cemetery in Salem, Oregon, at a future time when her ashes will be placed beside their father. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts in Mary's memory be directed to the Salem Hospital Foundation's Cass H Bailey and Mary Bailey Goodell Scholarship Fund, Salem, Oregon 97309, or on-line at salemhealth.org/donate.
