Mary Wade Obituary
Mary Lucille Wade

August 22, 1928 - August 30, 2013

SALEM - Mary Lucille Wade passed away on Friday, August 30 at the age of 85 due to complications related to heart failure. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, D. DeVon Wade and her two sons, Joel(Susan) and Mel(Maureen), both of Salem, Oregon. She also leaves behind her legacy of love to her 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Mary was born August 22, 1928 in Brownsville, Indiana to Clifford and Lucille Sanders. She was raised on the family farm with her four sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her sisters Helen Manes of California, Doris Conrad of Indiana, Ruth Ryan of Idaho, and her brother John Sanders of Florida.

In 1949 Mary graduated from Brownsville High School. After high school she finished her nurses training in 1951 with her degree from Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.

She went on to earn her bachelors of science from Asbury College in 1953, where she also played on the women's basketball team. It was there she met her future husband DeVon. They were married on August 29, 1953. She then worked at Evansville Protestant Hospital until moving to Oregon in 1961.

After moving to Salem, Mary worked briefly for the Marion County Health Department. In 1962 she took a position at Salem General Hospital as a nursing supervisor. That year she also started her masters training in nursing administration at the medical school in Portland. She completed her masters degree in 1964. During her masters training she became director of nursing at the General Hospital. After the merger between Salem General and Salem Memorial Hospitals, Mary was named Vice President of nursing, a position she held from 1966 to 1988, when she retired.

Mary was a tireless worker. She loved making clothes for her grandchildren, banners for Trinity Covenant Church, knitting, gardening, and most of all her women's golf group at Salem Golf Club. Before retiring she became one of the first female members of Salem Rotary Club. After retiring, she volunteered her time at blood drives, and with hospice. She converted the library at her church to the Dewey decimal system. She had a big role in helping raise her grandchildren. She was a constant friend to her children, and a non-stop reminder of the value of working hard and being honest. She was a faithful companion to DeVon for 60 years and one day. She touched the lives of many. She will be missed. May she rest in peace.

A service to celebrate the life of Mary will be held Tuesday September 10 at 4 P.M. at Trinity Covenant Church in Salem, Oregon. The family requests that any gifts in memorial be made to the free medical clinic at Trinity Covenant Church. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
