Robert J. Coates
August 20, 1926 - April 6, 2014
Robert (Bob) Coates passed away peacefully at OHSU Hospital in Portland on April 6, 2014 after a recent fall.
He was born to Kenneth Coates and Wanda (Bachleitner) Coates on August 20, 1926, and grew up in Perham, Minnesota. He graduated from Perham High School in 1944.
In July 1944, he enlisted in the Army Air Force and was trained as a cryptographer. He received his discharge from the Army Air Force in November 1946 after World War II had ended.
In January 1947 he began attending the University of Minnesota and in June 1952 he graduated with an L.L.B. (a law degree) and a Bachelor of Science and Law Degree.
Bob chose a career with State Farm Insurance Company instead of going into private law practice. His primary function during his entire career with State Farm was dealing with bodily injury liability claims, first as a field claim representative and then in a claim supervisory capacity. Areas he supervised at different times included the states of Idaho and Montana and portions of Washington and Oregon. He retired in 1991 after 39 years with the company.
Bob is survived by his wife, Ida (Hausauer) Coates; 2 step-daughters: Sandra and Susan; and 4 step-granddaughters: Laurel, Holly, Jessica and Rena.
Bob's wife and family wish to extend a special thanks to the owner and the caring staff at Lone Oak Care Home in Silverton for their compassionate care of Bob during the time he was in their care.
A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers you may contribute in Bob's honor to the Alzheimer's Network: 2615 Portland Rd. NE, Salem OR 97301, telephone: (503)364-8100 or to any organization or foundation of your choice.
