Bonny L. Hammond Obituary
Bonny L. Hammond

Bonny Lou Hammond was born in Milwaukee on June 24th, 1927. Her early years were spent in Neenah with her mother and elder half-sister. At the age of 5, they moved to Ohio, and then on to California, following the jobs.

Bonny always had a soft spot for the state of her birth and returned for a time, under the guardianship of an Aunt, to attend Junior High School. Returning to California, she attended Hollywood High School, from which she graduated a year early due to academic excellence. She then attended UCLA, paying her own way, studying psychology, art, and horticulture.

In May of 1952, she married musician and drafting engineer John Bersch. Together they had two daughters: Janet, who died at age 2 ½, and Nancy, who survives both parents.

Bonny held a variety of jobs, the most rewarding of which was as a horticulturist, with Rosedale Nursery and later as a groundskeeper at her alma mater, UCLA. Bonny was also highly politically active, marching in favor of the Equal Rights Amendment and outspokenly supportive of civil rights for all.

Bonny returned to WI upon John's death, settling first in Waukau, followed by Packwaukee, and then in Stevens Point. She traveled extensively throughout the State, and as far as Canada, over that time.

Always an advocate for Dignity in Death, it was important to Bonny to let other seniors know that there is no shame in wanting to die at home. Her final message is this: "It is my wish that others may feel at ease with their wishes for their last days."

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations, in any amount with which you are comfortable, be made to your local Sierra Club, Audubon Society, or the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
