Michael M. Helgert
Age 68 of Plover passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, March 16, 2013 after a courageous battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure.
Mike was born November 25, 1945 in Fond Du Lac, WI. He was the son of the late John and Margaret "Marge" (Zanow) Helgert. Mike was raised in Milwaukee. He attended St. Aloysius Elementary School in West Allis, Pius High School and graduated from Francis Jordan High School in Milwaukee.
After high school, at the age of seventeen he joined the United States Navy on October 16, 1963 in Milwaukee, WI. He served on the USS Independence during the Viet Nam War. Mike received the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He was honorably discharge on October 15, 1969.
Mike then re-enlisted on February 1, 1969 in the United States Air Force. He served as a Sargent during the Vietnam War as a weapons mechanic, receiving the Air Force Longevity Service Award and the Air Force Good Conduct medal. He was honorably discharged on January 4, 1972.
Mike then re-enlisted in the United States Air Force on January 5, 1972 where he served another tour of duty in Upper Heyford, England. He was honorably discharged on July 2, 1976 at the Homestead Air Force Base.
He then joined the Air Force Reserves when he met his wife, Roseann Hammond of West Allis. Mike continued his military career as a reservist and Civil Service Unit Administrator, giving Uncle Sam thirty seven years of service.
Mike worked as a unit administrator in Louisville, KY, Thomasville, GA, while living in Cairo. GA. and later to the Army Reserves in Tifton, GA., living in Sumner and Enigma GA before coming back to Wisconsin in 2000 when he retired from the Military and Civil Service.
Living in Stevens Point, Mike dabbled in real estate for a few years before retiring completely to play golf and work with the VFW Post 10262 of Plover. He was a lifetime member of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) and the DAV (Disabled American Veterans).
Mike was involved with all the Veterans organizations he belonged to while residing in Cairo, GA., where he spent almost fifteen fantastic years surrounded by the most wonderful group of people anyone could ever want as friends. Mike will be sorely missed by the many folks he called friends and family.
Ever the optimist and never failing to say "love you" to one and all, and actually mean it, he was a real people person.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of thirty one years, Roseann Helgert of Plover. His twin sister Margaret "Meg" Helgert of Portland, OR. Three step daughters Theresa (James) Wilson of Springstead, WI, and their children Nicolas and Mallory, Victoria (Steve) O'Connell of Florence, WI, and their children Rachel and Eric, and Christina (Shawn) Keefe and their children Jacob, Alexis and Maxwell.
