Neal E. Johnson, age 86, of 1025 Brawley Street, Stevens Point, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on November 8, 2012, at Sylvan Crossing Assisted Living under the care of Heartland Hospice.
Neal was born January 8, 1926 in Stevens Point to the late Peter and Emma (Lien) Johnson. He was the youngest of five children. He attended Lincoln and Emerson Schools and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School. He received a degree in Business Administration at UW-Madison in 1949.
Neal served in the U.S. Navy, following his first year of college at UW-Madison. He served two years as a radioman aboard the minesweeper U.S.S. Tercel, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946.
Neal married Betty Warren December 27, 1954 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Stevens Point.
Following graduation, he began his insurance career as an underwriter at Sentry Insurance. After several years, he joined National Guardian Life Insurance Company in Madison as a general agent covering all of northern and western Wisconsin. He continued with NGL for over 45 years working with them until retirement.
Neal was a life member and past Exalted Ruler of the Stevens Point Elks Lodge #641 and a member of American Legion Post 6 and AMVETS Post 1051. Neal was an avid golfer and bowler, he was also a diehard Packer and Badger fan. He enjoyed music of many genres and liked family vacations. He had a charming wit and sense of humor.
Neal was a loving husband and father who will be deeply missed by his wife, Betty of 57 years; sons, Jim (Judy), Bill (Roger), and Fred (Rafael); daughters, Mary and Jean (Annie); grandson, Jake; brother, Robert (Anne). He is further survived by nieces Christine, Karen, Judi and nephews, Hal, Jim, David and Bob.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy, Marie and Eleanor.
A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday November 12, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Stevens Point, with Rev. Steve Olson officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Boston Funeral Home with an American Legion Ritual at 4:00 p.m. and an Elks Ritual at 5:30 p.m. There will also be a visitation at church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Coloma, WI. Memorials are established in his name for Sylvan Crossing Assisted Living and Trinity Lutheran Church.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the loving and caring staff at Sylvan Crossing Assisted Living and Heartland Hospice for their kindness and compassion shown to Neal and Betty, and the entire Johnson family.
