Gary Roger Carson
December 22, 1945 - October 10, 2013
Gary was born on December 22, 1945 to Hubert and Lela Carson of Success, MS. The youngest of 3 brothers, he grew up in a modest country home on a small farm. He learned early on to value nature, love fishing, and to cultivate and treasure land. Gary excelled in his one room schoolhouse and later in life went to Millsaps College. He attended Millsaps with his first and only love, Martha. Martha and Gary, among other interests, shared a love of literature and learning. Gary went on to obtain his PhD from Harvard University in literature. While in Cambridge, he started his family having Rachael and Forrest.
Gary led his family on arguably a path less traveled. After obtaining his doctorate, the Carson family went on sabbatical to Eastern Europe living primarily in Romania. This two year adventure allowed the family to see and explore most of Europe and make a lifetime worth of friends and memories. As with most of us, Gary was ultimately drawn back home and returned to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, settling in Saucier. He began his second career of a certified accountant on his return and settled into a diverse number of interests to include horticulture and antique collecting. He rekindled his passion for fishing in the estuaries and creeks of the area.
Life, including Gary's, is unfair in the living. Gary's travels and adventures charted a new course on October 10th, 2013. He lived out his remaining days focused on learning, reading, and with great wonder. Gary left this world on his terms surrounded by family and with dignity and grace. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Martha, and his two children, Rachael Tootle and Forrest Carson and their loving spouses, Jeff and Christine respectively. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Gabe, Katie, Forrest, and Andrew. He is forever their Babi. There are no goodbyes...
