Joseph F. Loris Sr.
Joseph Francis Loris Sr. age 85 of Pascagoula passed away Monday April 14, 2014 at his home surrounded by family.
Mr. Loris was born August 4, 1928 in Pascagoula, MS to John and Emma Loris. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and WWII. He retired from Halter Marine in 1993 after 26 years of service. He was a member of The VFW and American Legion and Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church. In his younger days he was quite an athlete, excelling in the Pascagoula men's city leagues of basketball and fast pitch softball. He loved reminiscing about old newspaper clippings and he kept all of them. He was credited with pitching the first no-hitters ever pitched in the Pascagoula Men's Fast Pitch Leagues in the early 1950's when men's fast pitch was king. Joseph was also convinced to re-enlist for 1 year to play fast pitch softball for the convenience of the U.S Army, he said "They fed and took care of me very well."
He enjoyed watching his grandchildren growing up thru their miscellaneous activities such as sports, church activities, boy scouts, cheerleading, band, dance, etc. He was an avid woodworker and specialized in bird houses after his retirement. Very seldom did a visitor leave his house without a birdhouse in hand as a gift. Known as being old school and talented to boot, he'll be known for his old saying "Give me room and I will run with the ball" when asked if he'd take the lead on anything.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by siblings, James, Margaret and Marie.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Faye Loris of Pascagoula; five children, Joseph Francis Loris Jr and his wife Donna. of Vancleave, Debbie Hodges and her husband David of Pascagoula, John Loris and his wife Ge Ge of Pascagoula, Jeffrey Loris and his wife Tina of Moss Point and Jay Loris and his wife Kay of Pascagoula, 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 4:00 pm with visitation one hour prior to service at O'Bryant-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula. Interment will follow with military honors at Machpelah Cemetery.
