Byron McKinley, most recently of Delray Beach, Florida, passed away on Thursday, August 15th at the Harbour's Edge Health Center. He was a prior resident of Broken Sound Country Club in Boca Raton and for more than 30 years of Bel Lido Isle in Highland Beach. He was born in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, on July 9, 1917. He is pre-deceased by his wife of 68 years, Gladys Haffenden McKinley, and their son, Byron (Ronnie) McKinley, Jr. Byron Sr. is survived by his daughter, Grace (Betsi) O'Neill of Boynton Beach and her husband Robert, his granddaughter, Megan E. Grohe of Chicago, Illinois and her husband Andrew, and three great-grandchildren, Eva, Jackson and McKinley Rose; a niece and two nephews. Byron was a veteran of WWII, having served twice in the Army, discharged as a Sergeant in November, 1945. He was in the second wave in the D-Day Invasion. Before his service, he was a drummer in a local band in the Syracuse, New York area, where he met his wife. They were married in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1941, where he was initially stationed. After his service, they moved to Buffalo, New York, where he graduated from the University of Buffalo, establishing a career as an accountant. He became an Enrolled Agent for the IRS in 1970 when they moved to South Florida. Byron and Gladys worked together to establish a successful accounting firm in Deerfield Beach until they were in their early 80's. Byron was an avid boater for many years, and a longtime member of the Buffalo Launch Club. He and his family moved their boat through the Intracoastal Waterway to South Florida in 1970, and remained active in local waters until the mid-80s. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 22 from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 at Babione Funeral Home, located at 1100 N. Federal Hwy. in Boca Raton. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 on Friday, at the same location. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his memory to the Bicol Clinic Foundation, which provides medical services to those unable to receive regular medical care in Third World Countries.
