Gene Marie Ryan Burgess, 88, passed away peacefully on 8/7/13 in Tampa, FL. Born in Chicago, IL on 6/4/25 to Art and Genevieve Ryan, Gene moved to Dania, FL shortly thereafter to become a South Florida pioneer with her parents. Gene earned a B.S. degree in Anatomy from Florida State University and a Masters degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Iowa. Gene was one of the first women to be licensed as a Physical Therapist in the State of Florida. Gene worked as a Physical Therapist in California for several years before returning to Ft. Lauderdale to be closer to her family and to continue her career with Easter Seals (Disability Services). She married Howie Burgess in 1960, had two children and raised a teenage step-daughter. She moved to Tampa in 2004 to be nearer to family and her beloved Sanibel Island. She resided at the Grand Court for the duration. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and brother, A.J. Ryan, Jr. She leaves behind her children, Ted (Claire), Laura (Mat) and Edie (Bill); eight grandchildren; her brother, Jim Ryan; and several nieces, nephews and their children/grandchildren. Gene was a devout Irish Catholic who loved life. In addition to her long and varied career as a Physical Therapist, wife and mother, she was an avid reader and shell collector, as well as an excellent bridge and tennis player. She was always interested in lively conversation, sports viewing, and was never too busy to listen to concerns expressed by her children and their friends. She participated in many church and community activities. Over the last 35 years she cherished her time with her husband, children, and grandchildren at her beach home overlooking the Gulf of Mexico on Sanibel Island. Services include a private family Mass at Christ the King Catholic Church in Tampa, a memorial service at the Grand Court, and a celebration of life in Dania at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, 821 S. Dale Mabry Hwy., Tampa, FL 33609 or a . The family wishes to especially thank all of the caregivers from Comfort Keepers and the Grand Court for making Gene's later days so meaningful.
