Joseph G, Shapiro, 81, Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Oyster Bay Cove, NY passed away on January 4th, 2014 at the University of Miami Hospital. Mr. Shapiro was born on December 3, 1932 in Glen Cove, NY to Benjamin and Eva (Shorenstein) Shapiro. Joseph grew up in Glen Cove, attended Bordentown Military Institute, and graduated from Eastern Military Academy. He attended Hofstra University and served in the U.S. Army, where he saw active duty in Korea. Following his service, he returned to Hofstra, pledged Epsilon Sigma, and received a degree in business. Joseph met Libby Posner when they were 10 and her family moved to his street in Glen Cove. They were married in 1952 and have spent over 61 years together. They were members of Congregation Tifereth Israel in Glen Cove and both Mr. Shapiro and his father were President and generous supporters of the oldest Synagogue on Long Island. Mr. Shapiro began work at age 12 for Commander Oil Corp, the company his father, Benjamin, founded in 1929. He never retired from business and, at the time of his death, was the Chairman and CEO of Commander Enterprises, President and CEO of Commander Oil Corp., Co-Chairman of TXX Services, and a Partner in Kennesaw Fruit & Juice Company. Mr. Shapiro held numerous Board and professional affiliations amongst which were Fleet Bank, Oil Heat Institute of Long Island, LIA, Glen Cove Zoning Board of Appeals. N.Y.S. Joint Legislative Committee of Environmental Management of Natural Resources, N.Y.S. Boating Council, North Shore University Hospital, Congregation Tifereth Israel of Glen Cove, and the Broward Sheriffs Advisory Council. Mr. and Mrs. Shapiro devoted the majority of their philanthropic efforts to benefit their Alma Mater, Hofstra University. Mr Shapiro was honored numerous times by Hofstra University with their Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award, Estabrook Award, and Presidential Medal of Honor. The Libby and Joseph G. Shapiro Alumni House at Hofstra was dedicated in 2004, and also the Libby and Joseph Shapiro Endowed Distinguished Academic Scholarship, Libby and Joseph Shapiro Endowed Scholarship at The School of Medicine and the Eva and Benjamin Shapiro Memorial Scholarship were established at the University. In addition, the Joseph and Libby Shapiro Family Foundation generously donates to educational, religious, health and civic institutions and organizations. Over his lifetime, Mr, Shapiro enjoyed golf, cars, sports, traveling and all types of boating. He loved to be at sea and spent considerable time yachting from Maine to the Bahamas. He was a member of the 32 degree Masons, Shriners International, Huntington Yacht Club, Coral Ridge Yacht Club, Coral Ridge Country Club, Cold Spring Country Club and the Ocean Reef Club. He loved his Country and wore an American Flag on his lapel every day. Joseph is survived by his beloved wife, Libby and their 4 children and their spouses: Leonard (Caryl) Shapiro, Carol (Jeffrey) Engel, Beth (Warren) Bromberg, and Susan Volk. He was known as Papa Joe or Pop-Pop, loved his grandchildren: Benjamin and Eve Shapiro, Blake and Grant Engel, Erica and Melissa Bromberg, and Jennifer Volk. A memorial service will be held at Congregation Tifereth Israel, 40 Hill Street Glen Cove, New York at 1pm on January 8th, burial will follow. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Hofstra University School of Medicine Medicine or University of Miami Hospital or UM Miller School of Medicine.
