Dr. Margaret Sue Hamilton, 70, of Hollywood, Florida, passed away Saturday, August 16th. Margaret was born on April 15th, 1944, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, as the second child of Jesse and Emma Alexander. Dr. Hamilton obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of Detroit Mercy, a Masters of Nursing Science from University of Arkansas and a PhD in Nursing from Indiana University. Dr. Hamilton taught Nursing at DePauw University, Purdue University and Florida International University from which she recently retired. Dr. Hamilton also served as a nurse in the US Army in Vietnam. While in the US Army, Margaret wed Donald Hamilton (married from 1968 to 1989). She had her first child, Joseph, while stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and her second child, Dorothy, while serving at Ohau, Hawaii. After an honorable discharge, Margaret resided in Arkansas, Indiana and finally Florida. Margaret was an avid reader who loved being a member of the book club at Murder on the Beach Bookstore in Delray Beach, Florida. Margaret also belonged to a breast cancer support group which met Tuesday nights at Memorial Hospital South. Margaret loved working with her hands, be it cooking, painting and knitting in her earlier years, growing herbs and gardens in her middle years, and making/beading jewelry in her later years. She was a partner in "Beading Ladies" which sold their creations and donated the proceeds to help breast cancer survivors. She gave her time freely to anyone who needed her. Margaret is survived by her brother Raymond Alexander, her children Joseph Hamilton and Dorothy (Donna) Hamilton and three grandchildren - Kazmira, Nina and Ethan. Family and friends are invited for a Celebration of Life for Dr. Margaret Hamilton on Saturday, October 11th at 11AM, in Room 110, Building AHC3 at the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences at the Modesto Maidique Campus of Florida International University. In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable gifts be made to support nursing scholarships.
