GEORGE A. BARKETT was born at home, in Jacksonville, FL, on March 27, 1934, to Abraham and Della Barkett. In 1939, he moved to Miami where his parents owned a small, neighborhood grocery store. He graduated from Miami Senior High School in 1952. In 1959, he graduated from Emory University with a DDS degree, married the love of his life, Sue Bull Barkett, and enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Muenchweiler, Germany with the 124th Medical Detachment serving Army personnel throughout the NATO countries. Following his Army discharge, he practiced dentistry in Key West before enrolling in the orthodontic program in Miguel University in Montreal, Canada, where he received his MS degree. In 1965, he opened his orthodontic practice in Vero Beach, a city he loved. George was the first board certified orthodontist in Indian River County. He retired in 2000 having earned many honors and certifications throughout his distinguished career. George was the eldest of six beloved brothers and was a proud member of: The Rotary Club of Vero Beach; Founder and CEO of Songs For Peace International, Inc.; and Trinity Episcopal Church. George loved family gatherings and lunch with his brothers on Wednesday; Tennis with his buddies; and fishing with his buddies locally, in Alaska, and Brazil. George is survived by his beloved wife, Sue Bull Barkett; daughter and son-in-law, Andrea Barkett and Kirby Kenney; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Rita Barkett; his grandchildren, Samuel, Lily, and Anna Kenney and Megan Barkett; and his five brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Abraham (Skip) Barkett; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Barkett; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Barkett; Mr. and Mrs. Ted Barkett; Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Barkett; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church on Friday, July 12, 201, from 5-7:00 P.M. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2013, at 1:00 P.M., at Trinity Episcopal Church on Royal Palm Blvd. in Vero Beach. Internment will be at Crestlawn Cemetery in Vero Beach, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Songs For Peace International, Inc., a non-profit founded by George which promotes world peace through music.
