HOWARD ELLIS GRAY Howard Ellis Gray, 93, passed away on April 7, 2013, at his John's Island home. He was born on November 24, 1919, to Belford Mosby and Florence Basham Gray in Kimball, West Virginia and grew up in Norton, Virginia. Howard graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1942. Meeting on a blind date, his wife of 64 years, Mary E. (Deede) Gray, preceded Howard in death in 2007. A commissioned officer of Aviation in the U.S. Marine Corps, Howard served in combat in WWII and the Korean War. A Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism under the most hazardous field conditions was presented to Howard's Second Marine Aircraft Wing Unit. He marked his career in the insurance claims business and eventually sold his company to Equifax. On the same day in 1981, Howard and Deede both retired and relocated to Vero Beach, where they had vacationed for many years. Howard was an avid tennis player. He served as Chairman of John's Island Tennis Committee and President of his Condominium Association. Howard served on many charitable boards: VNA/Hospice Foundation, Honorary Board Member of the Indian River Medical Center Foundation, Board of Directors Member of the Indian River Medical Center Hospital, Homeless Family Assistance Center Board Member, Boys & Girls Club Board Member, and Alcohol Abuse Sponsor. He was a member of Christ Church Vero Beach. Howard was a devoted alumni and athletic foundation supporter of the Virginia Tech Hokies. He was rarely seen without the "VT" cap. Howard is survived by his son, Richard E. Gray and wife, Martie Blevins, and daughters, Mallory and Madison of Roswell, Georgia. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 13, at 10:00 a.m. at Christ Church Vero Beach, 925 14th Lane, Vero Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Indian River Medical Center Foundation, 1000 36th Street, Vero Beach, Florida 32960. Paid Obituary
