JOHN SHELDON CAROTHERS John Sheldon Carothers, 93, born January 21, 1920 on Staten Island, NY, and who resided at Indian River Estates, Vero Beach, FL, passed into another life on April 27, 2013. Surviving him are Vena, his loving wife of almost 66 years; 4 children: Marilyn (Gary) Williams of Morgantown, WV, Steven (Gail) Carothers of Calais, ME, Carol (Ken) Hoon of Jupiter, FL and Sheryl (Herb) Wells of Okeechobee, FL; 3 grandchildren: Angel (Josh) Ege, Jeffrey Hoon, and Michelle Carothers; and 4 wonderful great-grandchildren. The oldest of 11 children, John "Shel" was predeceased by 6 of his siblings. After serving as a Petty Officer 1st Class in the U.S. Navy "Seabees" during WWII, he attended the University of Miami and later settled in the Philadelphia, PA area. He was employed as a civilian by the Philadelphia Naval Base for more than 30 years, where he rose to the position of Chief of Maintenance Engineering for the Northern Naval Command. Additionally, he considered it an honor to be a 70-year member of the fraternal order of Free and Accepted Masons and served many years as Secretary of Jupiter Light Lodge #340. With deep gratitude and love, the family wishes to recognize John and Vena's companion, Rhonda Berlener. A service will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, Jupiter, Florida. Interment will be at Riverside Memorial Park, Tequesta, FL.
