JOSEPH DONALD "DON" GEYER Joseph Donald "Don" Geyer, 90, of Port St. Lucie, formerly of
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, died peacefully Thursday, October 31, 2013 in his home at Harbor Place, Port St. Lucie, Florida. Don was born in Chicago, January 7, 1923 to the late Mary M. (Cahill) and Joseph V. Geyer. Later, the family returned to their native Pittsburgh where Don graduated from Oliver H.S. (1940). He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and returned home to marry Evelyn Mowry (1948). He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh (1949). Professionally Don was best known as a dedicated and inspiring teacher, coach, official and mentor. He was a Health and Physical Education teacher in the Pittsburgh Public Schools and Supervisor of HPE for many years in the Shaler Area School District. For his numerous contributions to the sports of swimming and diving, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Swimming Hall of Fame (1979) and the Shaler Athletic Hall of Fame (2004). Throughout his life he influenced countless numbers of young people by demanding excellence, teaching life lessons, and inspiring them to become better people. Together Don and Evie raised five children, all of whom they were especially proud. They were devoted and long time members of Providence U.P. Church where Don served as an Elder and Clerk of Session. Following retirement (1983), Don and Evie made Port St. Lucie their home. Don continued to serve his community as a member of the PSL Parks and Recreation Committee and the Park's Edge Assoc. Board of Directors. Don and Evie were founding members of the Faith Congregational Church where he served as Treasurer, Head of Stewardship, sang in the choir, and organized many a pancake breakfast. Don was an avid sports fan and played tennis competitively until the age of 85. He loved to sing, dance, play bridge, and travel with Evie and their many friends. Always generous with his time and talents, Don was loved and respected by all who knew him and will dwell in our hearts forever. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Evelyn (Mowry); daughters Claudia (Nicholas J.) Hickly; Mary Jo Geyer (Ray Burdett); son Joseph S. (Kelly Ossman); daughters-in-law Colleen (Trew) and Judith (McQueen); nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister Barbara G. Spencer; and many nieces and nephews. Cherished sons Donald A. and Jeffrey B. Geyer and his brother Jack L. Geyer predeceased Don. A memorial service celebrating Don's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Faith Congregational Church where the family will receive friends following the service.
