John W. Stokes Jr., 88, died Feb. 24, 2013. He lived in Stuart from 1939 to 1944. He graduated from the University of Florida as well as Emory Law School. He served four years as a Navy pilot during World War II. He served as assistant U.S. attorney from 1954 to 1961. He was appointed U.S. attorney for the Northern district of Georgia by President Nixon in 1969. Survivors include his wife, Ullainee Stokes; three children, John Paul Stokes, Richard Stokes and Holly Brask; brother Deane H. Stokes Sr.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, John W. Stokes, Sr., who was founder of the Stokes Foundation in Stuart that awarded scholarships to Martin County students. Services: A memorial service was March 9. Arrangements were by H.M. Patterson and Son, Oglethorpe Hill, Ga.
