Leonard P. "Smitty" Schmitt, 90, died Dec. 16, 2012, at the Palm City Nursing and Restorative Care Center. He was born in Palm Bay and lived on the Treasure Coast for 34 years, coming from West Palm Beach. Before retiring he helped promote and establish Dandee Bakeries. He retired as general manager of the Fort Pierce Bakery Division in 1987. During World War II he served in the Army Air Forces, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He flew as a crew member on a B-24 Liberator. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with cluster, the Air Medal with cluster and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church, Fort Pierce. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and past president of Holy Name School in West Palm Beach. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Muriel M. Schmitt of Palm City; daughters, Marcia L. Wehrell of Port St. Lucie and Elaine Schmitt of Palm City; brothers, William "Bill" Schmitt of Melbourne, Edward J. Schmitt of Palm Bay and Walter Schmitt of Lancaster, Calif., Jerome Schmitt of Palm Bay; sisters, Rita M. Karpinski of Allentown, Pa., and Veronica Philabaum of Palm Bay; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son, Leonard P. Schmitt Jr.; brothers, Nick Schmitt, Louis Schmitt, George Schmitt and Frank Schmitt; and sisters, Barbara Ruby and Antoinette Lauve. Memorial contributions may be made to the Treasure Coast Hospice, 1201 S.E. Indian St., Stuart, FL 34997, www.tchospices.org. Services: A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Forest Hills Funeral Homes, Palm City Chapel, with military honors provided by the Patrick Air Force Base Honor Guard.
