SUMNER P. LAPP Sumner P. Lapp, a long time resident of Vero Beach and World War II veteran, died on Tuesday, the 26th of February 2013. He was 94 years old. A committed member of Christ Church of Vero Beach and Past Commodore and Chaplain of the Vero Beach Yacht Club, Sumner especially enjoyed the annual Blessing of the Fleet. Through the Power Squadron, of which he was a former Commander, he provided instruction in celestial navigation to boating enthusiasts. An avid bridge player, Sumner made many friends and looked forward to his weekly games. Sumner's life had many notable chapters, including a young adulthood shaped by World War II. Prior to joining the military he attended the University of Rochester, and later became commanding officer of an Army Air Corps squadron stationed in the Pacific Theater of Operations, receiving 8 Bronze stars. Following the war, he returned to upstate New York with his wife, Wanda, where they raised their two sons, John and Ted. A natural engineer, Sumner built his career in Engineering Sales at the Lapp Insulator Company in LeRoy, NY. After retirement, Wanda and Sumner relocated to Vero Beach in 1983 where they enjoyed the Vero Beach lifestyle, especially boating and golf, until Wanda's death in 1994. Sumner later wed Meredith Blume, a long-time Vero Beach resident. They were members of the Moorings Club, and enjoyed many happy years until her death in 2005. He is survived by his sons, John and wife Linda of North Carolina and Theodore and wife Barbara of California, and two grandchildren, Katherine and Jacqueline Lapp, as well as his dear friend Patsy Helseth. A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Church Vero Beach on March 14, 2013, at 10:30 AM. A reception will follow at the Vero Beach Yacht Club. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Church or the Hibiscus Children's Village, both in Vero Beach. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home.
