VINCENT DE PAUL HOLLAND Vincent de Paul Holland of Palm City, Florida died on December 26, 2012 peacefully surrounded by the love of his family. He was born in Bronx, New York and graduated from Holy Cross College in 1941 where he was captain of the basketball team. Shortly afterwards, he entered the Marine Corps Officers' Training Program. During World War II he served in the Pacific arena and rose in rank to Battalion Commander, leading one of the first battalions of African American Marines. After the war, he settled in Bellport, Long Island where he was owner of a beverage company. Active in the community and volunteer work, he was President of the Patchogue Kiwanis Club and Commodore of the Domino Yacht Club. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Bellport Golf Club, and a charter member of the Martin Downs Country Club. At 90 years of age, he organized a community food drive for the Treasure Coast Food Bank. He was a parishioner and Eucharistic Minister at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Palm City, Florida. His first wife of 53 years, Helen Butler Holland died in l994. He is survived by his wife Ethel Slater Holland, his daughters Patricia Forts and her husband Jeffrey, Kathleen Bollerud and her husband Raymond, and his step-children Beverly and Michael Sheehan, Susan and James Hughes, Nancy and Ronald Schlag, and Charles and Eileen Slater. He had 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Visitation: 3:00PM - 5:00PM, Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Forest Hills Funeral Homes, Palm City Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00AM, Monday, December 31, 2012 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Palm City.
