Claudia M. (Foster) Houtz, 75, of Lewistown Vally, Tamaqua, died peacefully on Thursday, July 3, at St. Luke's Hospice House in Bethlehem. Claudia was a courageous and determined cancer survivor having battled both breast cancer and CML over the past 20 years.
She was born on April 10, 1939 in San Francisco, California to the late Amos O. and Mildred D. (Nickens) Foster. She spent her early years transiting the Pacific Ocean between California and Guan, where she graduated from high school. Early in her career, she worked for both the US Naval Exchange and the US Immigration Service. She spent the bulk of her career as a determine wife, mother, grandmother, hobbyist and homemaker.
Claudia had several passions that she devoted a lot of creative time and energy toward, including her beloved quilting, needlepoint and ceramic painting, among many others. In more recent years she became a vigorous online blogger connecting with other cancer patients and survivors, sharing stories, tips, love and compassion.
She was a member of the Schuylkill County Quilters Guild. She was a Christian and a previous member of Zion UCC Church, Lewistown Valley.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Richard (Dick) Houtz of Lewistown Valley; a son Peter and his fiancé Denise of Homeworth, OH; a son Rick and his wife Karen and grandchildren Luke, Colin and Abbey of Chester, NJ, and a son Chris of Lewistown Valley; a sister Margie Hawkins of Lyman, SC and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and her daughter Pamela R. Houtz in 1982.
Services: Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8. from the Zizelmann-Roche Funeral Home, 500 E. broad St., Tamaqua followed by internment in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers , donations can be made in her memory to St. Luke's VNA Hospice, Development Office, 801 Ostrum Street, Bethlehem, PA 18015.
