George J. Spillane|
George J. Spillane, 98, of Allentown, passed away into the arms of the Lord on Friday, Feb. 28. He was the loving husband of the late Ellen L. (Gibbons) Spillane. They had been married for 71 years.
He was a member of the Cathedral Church of St. Catharine of Siena, Allentown, for 65 years.He retired at the age of 85 after owning and operating his own businesses, G.J. Spillane 5 & 10 Cent stores in Allentown and Emmaus and Spillane's Variety Store, Palmerton, for 52 years.
- Born in Lansford, he was a son of the late William and Mary (Henehan) Spill-ane.
Prior to opening his first store in 1949, he managed F.W. Woolworth stores in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania for 14 years.
He had a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed fishing and taking his many friends and relatives for airplane rides after obtaining his private pilot's license at the age of 45.
Spillane was a Navy veteran of World War II.
The joy of his life were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are two sons, William G. of Allentown and George J. Jr., and his wife, Phyllis, of West Lawn; three daughters, Mary Ellen, wife of Francis Steckel, Carol, wife of Barry O'Donnell, and Bette, wife of Don Storck, all of Allentown; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by three brothers, John, Matthew and William; a sister, Marie Durnin; and a daughter-in-law, Marie Spillane.
Service: Mass of Christian Burial 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 7, Cathedral Church of St. Catharine of Siena, 18th and Turner streets, Allentown. Interment, Mass in Resurrection Cemetery, Wescosville. Call 9-11:15 a.m. Friday, Robert C. Weir Funeral Home, 18th and Turner streets, Allentown.
