Joseph Michael Porvaznik III, Staff Sgt. U.S.A.F., retired, 30, of Lake Hauto, Nesquehoning, died suddenly Saturday, July 5, in the Blue Mountain Health System's Gnaden Huetten Campus, Lehighton.
Born in Coaldale, he was a son of Joseph M. II and Kathy J. (Valentine) Porvaznik, with whom he resided.
A 2002 graduate of Marian Catholic High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force with distinction as a tactical air control party craftsman in the 17th Air Support Operations Squadron (AFSOC).A Purple Heart recipient, Joseph's commendations include the Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, W/V Air Force Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Air Force Combat Action Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Parachute Badge and Ranger TAB.
He was a member of the Summit Hill American Legion and Nesquehoning V.F.W. posts.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister Candice in New Hampshire; a brother, Michael J., in North Carolina; maternal grandparents, Dolores and Francis Vitek of Barnesville and William Valentine of Tamaqua; three aunts, Sister Susan Joseph Porvaznik, I.H.M., of Immaculata, Beth Valentine of Tuscarora and Sharyn, wife of Joe Martin of New Orleans, La.; two uncles, William Valentine of Tamaqua and Brian Valentine, and his wife, Lisa, of Drums; and many cousins.
Service: Public calling hours 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua. Private military honors will be conducted graveside at Sky-View Memorial Park, Hometown.
