Richard J. Hope
Richard J. Hope, 85, Allentown, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salis-bury Township. He was the husband of the late Barbara (Sweeney) Hope, who was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Sweeney, Tamaqua. They were married in 1956 at St. Jerome's Church, Tamaqua.
He was the son of the late Richard and Claire (Bonner) Hope, Tamaqua.
Hope graduated from Perkiomen Prep and Penn State University. A veteran of the United States Navy, he served in the legal department from 1950 to 1954 in Norfolk, Va. and on the aircraft carrier, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt.
After discharge he worked in the family business in Tamaqua until 1958, when he re-opened the Allentown Business School, serving as owner and director. In 1968 he sold the school to ICS of Scranton. He then joined Air Products and Chemicals, Trexlertown, where he worked as a personnel supervisor for 22 years.
After retirement in 1990 he volunteered at LVHS for 10 years, and worked part-time in the personnel department for Lutron Electronics, Center Valley.
Surviving are a daughter, Jane McDonnell, Blue Bell, Pa; a sister, Elizabeth Johnson, Ocean City, N.J.; a brother, Roger Hope, Palm Springs, Calif.; and a granddaughter, Hope McDonnell.
He was predeceased by a son-in-law, David McDonnell.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, Mass of Christian Burial, Cathedral Church of St. Catherine of Sienna, 18th and Turner streets., Allentown. Interment in St. Jerome's Cemetery, Tamaqua, following Mass. Call 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at Robert C. Weir Funeral Home, 18th and Turner streets, Allentown.
